Remixing a Live Performance

I was recently asked to remix a song where a few different variations were needed. I wanted to challenge myself and take on a genre of music that I've never remixed before, seeing as electronic music is the go to for the remixes in my arsenal. I chose a blues rock song called "Hey Delilah" by Big Head Todd & and Monsters. It was recorded live, which brought a whole new challenge that I had yet to encounter. None the less decided to take it on.

My first take on the song was to tempo map and record other instruments on the recording in order to change the feel, and maybe even the genre, of the song a little bit. So thats what I did. I changed the drums and recorded a few elements on the track including acoustic guitar, BGVs, and key (yes like car keys) in order to give the song more of a country style.

My second recreation was to add electronic elements to the song that weren't originally been in the room when it was recorded. Ultimately, I wanted the song to take on a whole new feel. I used rewire in Logic Pro to connect to Ableton Live, in order to added screeching guitar, electric claps, and lots of layered drums to change the feel of the song.

Hey Delilah Groove Change

For the last requested song variation, I wanted to do some sound design to make the song have elements that don't even really belong in the song, yet can co exist in the the record with the rest of the tracks. To me, that's the real challenge of a remix. Using arppegiated synths, airplane sounds, custom bells, choir vocals, and many other sounds, I created a layer for the song that thickens up its presence.

Finally just to leave some room for original work, but still have variation, I left everything in the track the same and only changed the grove of the song in order to give it a little bit of a different fingerprint.
